[Infographic] Deconstructing a Fondant Cake

Deconstructing a Fondant Cake will help you understand exactly what you can ask your cake designer for. What are the elements of a fondant cake? And what does this cake look like on the inside?
The cake is the centerpiece of any party, and if you're reading this infographic, it's because you want to make your next celebration unforgettable.
And know that to create an impact at your party, nothing beats a fondant cake.
Fondant is very versatile, and the modeling techniques for cake toppers and side decorations are based on the same figurine modeling techniques.

Cake Topper, Decorations and Side Decorations
The cake topper, decorations, and side decorations are quite literally the cherry on top.
It's the central theme to be modeled and can be inspired by (believe it or not) anything your imagination can reach.
With that in mind, through detailed work, we've organized the theme categories by popularity.
This way you can get ideas for what your next cake theme will be.
Here are the main themes:
- Sports
- Characters
- Hobbies
- Professions
- Holidays
- Family and Friends
- Food and Drinks
- Music and Bands

Understanding How Tiers Work
We calculate cake sizes by the number of servings rather than by weight, following the table below as a guide.
When the party is for few guests but there's still a need to make the cake tall for a nice table composition, you can use a dummy cake for the bottom tiers.
The shape of the cake also affects the number of slices.
How to Choose the Cake Base
It's the support that serves both to hold cakes, desserts in general, and to make the party decoration more beautiful. One advantage is the variety of sizes, materials, and styles available.
Materials
The choice of base material for the cake depends on:
- the weight of the food;
- not damaging the cake if it comes in contact with syrups and toppings;
- the table composition.
Silver
Widely used for weddings, anniversaries, or more traditional events.
Ceramic
Great value for money, available in all designs and colors, with many options for different types of events.
Wood or MDF
Great for supporting buttercream, whipped cream, and ganache cakes, as they are sturdy and keep the dessert safe from cracking.
Glass or Crystal
Can last for many years, are great at retaining the cake's warmth longer, and are sturdy enough for up to 5 kilos.
Sizes
You can find cake bases in small sizes, around 15 centimeters in diameter; medium, between 20cm and 30cm; and large, from 40cm upward.
How to Choose the Best Base for Your Cake?
Don't worry -- base options are usually offered by your cake designer.
You can also find all types of bases at specialty party rental shops.
Choosing the base depends a lot on the event:
- For example, weddings call for silver bases;
- Some more decorated cakes look best on a glass base, since it doesn't interfere with the cake's visual;
- Or a ceramic base in the cake's color;
- Wooden bases are always covered with fondant;
- And usually bases have tall feet to give the cake more height.
The Best Part: Batters and Fillings
Remember that each tier, meaning each cake has 3 layers of batter and 2 layers of filling.
And the 2 filling layers can be different flavors, making something already incredible even better.
Of course, we need to be careful with the flavor combinations of the batter and the 2 fillings, so ask your cake designer for help.
As an example, below we have a cake with chocolate chiffon batter with caramelized walnut filling and another with dark chocolate ganache.
